| Why are we here? |
| Saturday, May 19, 2007 |
This is the question all of have asked at one time or another. There is no simple answer to that question. Some will tell you that we are here to be good parents, raise productive children, etc. Some will say that we are here to do God's will. Good lord...that is the hardest thing to figure out. What IS God's Will, and where do we fit into it? Yes, I know. The Bible is God's Word. Yes, I read it. Yes, I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. I have also read many other texts of many other faiths, and texts of other beliefs that have nothing to do with Christianity. Many others profess their belief in Jesus Christ. But I see on a daily basis what people do in this world. I also see what they don't do. I hear what they say. I hear things unspoken. I hear the Lord speak to me, yes. Some call me a liar or a weirdo. I don't care. I know some who are probably far more obedient Christians than myself and they say that they have NEVER heard the Lord speak to them. But haven't they? Or were they just not tuned in to the right frequency at the time? I admit myself that there are times when the Lord has spoken to me that I have either not heard it or ignored it. I try to stay tuned in, but sometimes that tuner just goes out. Maybe I have it on AM when it should be on FM. Whatever the reason, I miss more than I receive, but I do receive. A friend of mine publishes a blog also and posted a blog on the Darfur crisis. He elaborates on how guilty he feels for not feeling more pain for the dead, maimed, and/or displaced, and for not doing more. I feel that which he states. But there are already many who strive to bring more attention to crises like these. Darfur has not been the only mass genocide to take place in our lifetimes. Rwanda, Libya, Central and Eastern Europe during the WWII, South America, Indonesia, Japan, Indo-China, etc.....these catstrophes have taken place all over the world. Every time, there were people somewhere who had no part in it feeling guilty that they can't stop it. How many murderous dictators can you name? Here's a few: Joseph Stalin. Chairman Mao. Adolf Hitler. Pol Pot. Mussolini. Moanmar Khadafi. Saddam Hussein. Idi Amin. Fidel Castro.
This list could go on and on. Should we feel guilty? I'm not so sure. Sorry? Sure. Should we do something? Absolutely. We are commanded to do so. Why? Because there is one who died to ease the suffering for all. It does not mean that suffering will end. As one who is much more versed than myself in the Christian faith told me once, "Some are pre-destined to suffer." This also means that some others are pre-destined to enjoy all the comforts that this Earth and their faith can give them. I'm not too sure of where I fit in that, but I nevertheless feel what my role is. I am just another face on this rock of 6.5+ billion, but I have a place. I do what I can do, and I don't feel bad about it. Whatever you think your place is, and whatever your faith, I believe that we all are capable of doing something, in our own way. I believe in the power of prayer. I also believe that the suffering that continues in places like Darfur, while tragic, are a symptom of the times that we live in, and that time is the period preceding the second coming, and that while our efforts can be made to serve and assist those who have suffered, there is little that can be done to actually prevent it from occurring. As long as there is injustice, intolerance, and hate in the world, then the suffering will continue. It will only change when the return of a Living God comes to pass. When that happens, all of those attributes of hateful men will pass away. Until then, we must be steadfast in praying for those who suffer and do what we can to ease that suffering, knowing that we alone will never achieve some Utopian state where we can eliminate it entirely. Our governments can't make it happen. Throwing money at the problem won't fix it.
